"So Meat Boy is a boy made of meat but he’s not like when designing him, it wasn’t a thought of ‘Hey, he’s made of steak’ or, or whatever else. It was more ‘Hey, he doesn’t have skin.’ He’s the boy without skin, so that’s why they call him Meat Boy. So he’s exposed to the elements. Maybe he’s always in pain but he just deals with it, but he has to be very careful with everything because anything could kill him. Like the smallest little thing, like salt or whatever could totally destroy him. I wanted to have his girlfriend kind of be more than a love interest and I wanted to play up the idea that he needs her. That she’s what completes him. Like not just emotionally but physically as well. And that’s why she’s bandage girl. So she’s kind of like the outer shell over Meat Boy that protects him and that’s why he needs her. He needs her back not only because he loves her but because that’s what completes him."
Indie Game: The Movie is a fantastic documentary. It gives a really clear insight on how indie game developers feel about their creations and the world around them.
